While shuttling back and forth on the train to TCRWP Coaching Institute, I had the opportunity to finish reading the ARC of Hunger, book 2 in the GONE series by Michael Grant. I always have great anticipation for a second book in a series after loving the original book, but with that anticipation also comes the worry that maybe I won’t think the sequel is as great as the first one.
Well I need not have worried about Hunger. It is a great sequel to Gone, picking up where the first book left off. Things are still pretty horrible in the FAZE (Fallout Alley Youth Zone) with tensions between Coates Academy students and townies n0t as tense as those between “normal” and those who have “power”.
Now that the kids have figured out how to survive the big 15 birthday poof, new challenges to put off death come in the form of hunger, zekes, and each other. The first chapter pulled me in immediately (and made my stomach turn, but I am pretty wimpy) and made me want to read without stop, just as the first book did.
You will want to read the first book Gone before Hunger is released so you are familiar with the well-developed characters of Sam, Lana, Diana, Caine, Computer Jack, Astrid, Edidlio, and Drake, as well as the meaning behind “Hungry in the dark”, “Nestor,” and “gaiphage”.
The chapter titles of this book also count time in a countdown of hours and minutes (example: 106 Hours 29 minutes). Hmm…liked it in the TV show 24, like it here.
The book is due to be released May 26, 2009 and Michael Grant has hit it out of the park again! Without doubt this book needs to added to your summer reading list.
ive just finished reading gone (litrelly) it’s basically the best book ive read ever. i would have read it sooner but it only just came out in England, unfortunalty. im 14 and am a bookworm so saying this book is my fav is really something. i just can’t wait for book 2 in the series to came out, apperently i have to wait another year because England has a different publishing date but i think amazon has come to my rescue! thanks for the blog, though now i really really want to get my hands on a copy of this book.
I”m so impatient for this sequel, having loved the first book, and I’m doubly excited to know that it didn’t disappoint. Just one question: how did you read it early? Do you have special connections or a job that allows you to do that? You are one lucky reader, in any case.
No special connections (although I wish I did!). My friend got an advanced review copy at NCTE this past November and let me read it! I am a lucky reader!
OMG!!!
Gone is my favorite book right now and i am soooo excited to for Hunger!! i cant wait, I’m 14 too, and my parents were so amazed that I actually had finished the first book, they said that they thought I got hit in the head with to many soccer balls. My favorite characters in the series are Diana and Caine because, Diana is mean, but you dont really know that much about her, and Caine and Diana’s relationship is funny. I just cant wait!
Gone is an awesome book. I can’t wait for Hunger. It will be as Gone. This was one of the best books I’ve ever read. i read a lot and I couldn’t put Gone down for one minute.
im reading Gone right now and am loving it so far! I read somewhere that this is a 6 book series! This has the potential to take over Twighlight and Harry Potter! =)
In hunger, i started reading the excerpt on harperteen, does anyone know what the countdown is for? In Gone the countdown was until Sam’s bday, but what’s it counting down to in this one? I can’t wait for the book to come out so i can see for myself…
I am going to have to go back and find out!
the countdown was for when they took down the darkness. the one chapter with duck goin down the tunnel says 7 mins so it must have taken 7 min for them 2 get down the tunnel and for duck to take the darkness down in2 the earth.
anyone know if there will b a 3rd book?
Okay, I’m thirteen and I read gone in around a week. I love reading, I have also read the whole twilight series. I think that this series could seriously take over twilight series! I loved gone! I can’t wait for hunger!
This series is one of the best that I’ve read. I love how it goes back and forth between characters instead of one person telling the story. This was an awesome book!
This book was the most amazing piece of writing! it was gory and romantic…this book deffinitly kept me on the edge of my seat! theres still multiple questions not answered that just makes waiting for the next book five times as great!
I am 53 and own 5 bookstores. I read children’s books from time to time and this is a great one. I am looking forward to finishing the series.
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is my favorite kids book of all time and was a good movie as well.
Does anyone know if they are gonna make a “Gone” movie?
It seems like they should!
i love reading! 🙂 i was done gone in about 2 days me and my friend both got it for christmas and she finished it before me and she got hunger and i have to wait till shes done because i dont have any money for hunger. i go through books soo fast. i finished implause by ellen hopkins in like 4 hours 😛 i finished the whole twilight series in a WEEK 😛 i think the twilight series and the house of night series and the city of bones books are the best books of life but gone is better than some other ones ive read 😛 does anybody know any other book i should read? i like vampires, werewolfs and normal people and anything else. 😛 suggest 🙂
i love reading books but sometimes i couldn’t find good books like that. If you know such good novels to recommend, please suggest
I love the gone series! I know this sounds lame but i cried when duck zhang died in the second book! 😦 does anyone know when lies is coming out in the UK?
They are probably making a tv series out of the gone series. Michael grant already turned down nickelodeon because they wanted to take the violence out of it and hollywood doesn’t want them because there are no adults in it so it will probably be on fox. hope that helped! 🙂
Can someone remind me of how the Darkness dies cuz i forogt and i need to know for a book report
i remember everything up until Sam and Caine are in the cave underneath to destroy the darkness
I just finished the series amazing books but do sam and astrid get back together?!?!
